Runescape: Behind the Scenes: January Update
Jan 7th
The folks at Runescape have posted the January edition of their behind the scenes articles where they detail what’s in store for the rest of the month. In this update they talk about the Phoenix summoning familiar, re-ordering spell lists, and more.
A new year often brings with it a sense of change or new adventure. For some, this rebirth is a nice, friendly affair, involving a new haircut and a resolution or two. For others, it means complex nesting rituals and a fiery demise…or perhaps a new beginning? Could we be talking about the legendary phoenix?
Our first update of the year is actually one we have been talking about for a while – the new Summoning familiar you voted for during the Summer. Of course, we could have just produced a simple Summoning creature to follow you around and do the occasional funky trick, but we decided that a legendary creature such as the phoenix deserved the full treatment. So, it will have its own tutorial-style quest, in which you learn how to deal with the unusual nesting habits of the giant, fire-drenched beast, AND a repeatable challenge you can take on every day, should you wish.

MMOsite 2009 Wrap-Up: 5 Best MMOs
How time flies! The year 2009 is coming to an end, and the year 2010 is waving at us! Every time a new year starts, we are prone to look back into the past and look into the future as well. For MMO players, the year 2009 was not a very satisfactory year. While there were many online games strongly promoted by producers and highly anticipated by players, few of them carried out tests and lived up to players’ expectations. At this point, many players can only look into the unknown year which is to come instead. As the recent news shows, 2010 is very likely to be a busy year, when great projects made by various game producers will jump into the MMO market successively. Specifically, the famous Blizzard recaps for WoW which have, greatly aroused the attention of the 1,200,000 WoWers; NCsoft which, keeping its high-end style, announced that it may carry out tests for its two important projects in 2010; and BioWare, the outstanding console game company, which is also going to give the audience a big surprise by means of the MMO version of Star Wars co-developed with LucasArt. Game producers compete with each other fiercely, while players sit still waiting More >

MMOsite 2009 Wrap-Up: Farewells to 5 MMORPGs
It is really a great grief to part from friends, relatives, family, even a familiar game. Every time when a game ends its service or shuts down a server, we have no choice but to leave. Maybe we don’t remember clearly when we met each other and how we got together, but we cannot forget the moment we bid farewell and the pain of parting.
At the last moment before the server closed down, we went to the rendezvous involuntarily where was crowded but silent. Nobody talked or nobody wanted to. Somebody intended to break the ice, “Hi, dudes, we can stay in contact!”, but people seemed more heavy-hearted. Indeed, now we could keep in touch via MSN, Facebook and continued to make jokes even if the server was unavailable any more. Whereas, without our beloved game, what should we talk about?
Many years later, when I tidied up my hard disks, I happened to find the client that hadn’t been started for a long time and then opened its Screenshots File unconsciously. The happy times we had spent together came back to me at once. Each screenshot passed through my mind as a short More >
Runescape: 2009: Year of the Upgrade
Jan 6th
The folks at Runescape have revealed their plans for what 2009 will have in store for the game, saying that this year they will be focusing on fixing minor problems and making small improvements rather than working on flashy expansions or new game systems.
So, the first post of the New Year and you’ll be wondering what the next 12 months in RuneScape will bring. The past year saw the introduction of PvP Worlds, RuneScape High Detail, Summoning, our first Grandmaster quest, combat minigames, and Distractions and Diversions. What can we do to top 2008?
Well, this is the challenge that we’ve set ourselves: 2009 has become our official Upgrade Year! So, what does that mean? It means our New Year’s resolution is to tweak and polish what we’ve already got in the game alongside creating new content. For example:
- Doing the ’little’ jobs that make a big difference (e.g. a ’You are here’ arrow on the world map) and basically fixing all the annoying little quirks the game has. Things that may be the least glamorous to work on and talk about, but which really add up.
- Updating some of the earliest content/quests to bring it up to date, and take advantage of More >
Competición de la Cacería de la Cabra Montesa – Hyborian Adventures
Jan 5th
More >
