City of Heroes: Mission Architect Awards Announced
Sep 30th
Today, Paragon Studios is announcing that they will be holding awards for the best use of the Mission Architect system. As a part of the announcement, our own Jon Wood spoke with Joe Morrissey about the contest and the feature that allows players to create their own in-game missions.
When Paragon Studios first launched City of Heroes: Mission Architect, it was seen by some as a bold experiment. By throwing open the doors to the tool behind their game, they were doing what very few had ever done before, taking user generated content to the next level.
On October 25th, the company will officially recognize the best that players have had to offer over the last six months and they will do so in a place that their efforts will be most appreciated, at Hero-Con, the annual fan event held for City of Heroes.
Awards will be handed out in the categories of: Best Hero Arc, Best Villain Arc, Best In-Canon Story, Best Enemy Group, and Arc of the Year. The winners in each category will go home with a prize pack that includes a Sapphire ATI HD 3650 512MB GDDR3 video card and other items.

More >Aion: An Intro to the Ranger
Sep 30th
MMORPG.com’s Josh Price takes this quick look at his early experiences playing a Ranger in NCsoft’s Aion.
When the open beta started, I decided to dive head first into the Ranger class, and boy am I glad I did. After having sunk over twenty five levels with both the Assassin and the Gladiator during the previous closed beta events, I must say that I had (and am having)a good time with the Ranger, a rip roarin’ good time, even. The class is not without its faults, though. Luckily, most of those faults are only below level twenty. During this time the Ranger can be a bore and a hassle to play, due to a limited number of abilities. But if you’re willing to see it through until the late teens, you’ll find yourself quickly filling those britches. Some might say that it’s like growing into adulthood; let’s just hope you’re not a late bloomer.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning: Apprentices & New User Journey in 1.3.2
Sep 30th
Version 1.3.2 of Warhammer Online is on the PTS right now and includes a number of major changes to the game. The most notable of these changes are the New User Journey and Apprentice System. The former being a total overhaul of the experience new players have with the game, while the latter allows for a new City of Heroes-style sidekicking function called the "Apprenticeship" system.
The details of the new user journey are quite extensive, but some of the major changes include an entire shift of focus from the three racial pairings to the Empire vs. Chaos pairing. In the interest of making the game more accessible to new recruits, all new players, regardless of race, will begin in the Empire vs. Chaos starting zones, and all RvR will be re-focused to this pairing as well in Tier 1. In addition to the aforementioned shifts, new characters will also be placed in a default starting guild, many UI elements will be disabled and revealed slowly to new characters, an overhaul of the tutorial system has been implemented, and much more.
RvR as a whole will also see some major changes in 1.3.2, as well. One such example would be the removal More >

Irvine, Ca. – September 25, 2009 – GamersFirst (www.gamersfirst.com), a service of K2 Network and one of today’s most popular free2play online game destinations has just released Echoes of an Empire, the newest expansion to Sword of the New World: Grando Espada.
Sword of the New World – Play for Fun
Echoes of an Empire introduces a whole slew of new content. The main addition to the game is the new region Errac and its main city El Dorado. This region’s aesthetics are inspired by classical Central American ruins, bringing a peaceful harmony of nature and man that is a rare find among games. El Dorado is built around a Cha’acan temple, now protecting the survivors of the cataclysmic events of Caebolan. The Erracan people of El Dorado are proud and resilient. It will not be easy to gain their trust and much more difficult to cultivate their respect.

A WoW player’s PvP guide to Aion
Sep 29th
Player vs Player (PvP)
There are no battlegrounds in Aion (e.g., Alterac Valley). Instead, the PvP is more “open-world” so to speak. The biggest PvP zone is called the Abyss. Players can only enter the Abyss from levels 25-50. Contained in the Abyss are the best XP opportunities, PvE rewards, PvP rewards, instances, and fortress raids. Think of the Abyss as a giant (and we mean giant) contested zone from a WoW PvP server. PvP is highly encouraged in Aion and it is difficult to avoid it once you reach level 25.
You gain Abyss Points (AP) by killing enemy players and Balaur NPCs in the Abyss (and lose it when you die). AP is kind of like honor from back when WoW first launched. AP gives you special PvP ranks and you can spend it like currency to buy various specialty items and abilities.
Two other forms of PvP in Aion include Rifts and the Arena. Rifts are portals that take you to your enemy’s PvE lands. Quests still start sending you through Rifts in your mid-20s. The capital cities also contain Arenas where you can participate in giant free-for-alls against your allies. Basically, it’s a way to practice PvP risk-free.

A WoW player’s guide to Aion
Sep 29th
So, you’re a big fan of World of Warcraft (or at least you were at one time) and you’ve heard about this new MMO called Aion. “Hmmm, I wonder what that’s all about?” you ponder. “Anything similar?” you posit. “What’s so different?” Well, we’ve written a WoW player’s guide to Aion just for you! Sit back with a cup o’ joe, while we compare and contrast the two MMOs for you.
Races/factions
There are three factions in Aion: Elyos of Elysea, Asmodians of Asmodae, and Balaur of the Abyss. All three continents are contained in the world of Atreia, connected by the Tower of Eternity, and overlooked upon by Aion (aka God). The Elyos and Asmodians are playable races. The former is a bit lighter and the latter is darker, though neither side is truly evil. Balaur are the dark ones; an NPC race of dragon-like demons bent on the domination of Atreia. Think of it as Alliance, Horde, and… the dragons of WoW (but way more evil). The difference between WoW and Aion is that the conflict between all three factions is much more in the forefront of your gaming experience. As an Elyos you will fight Asmodians and vice versa. Aion – Levels 1 to 10
Sep 29th
Eventually this weekend I managed to ascend in Aion and hit level 10 with my now Asmodian Gladiator, Mantooth. It took me a while to get there due to the fact that I’ve been busy in real life as I’m in the midst of moving apartment and also that I found leveling in Aion to be pretty slow compared to other MMORPGs. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, except that in this case it does seem to make the whole experience even more tedious and dull than it already is. Yeah, as you can gather from that statement, I’ve been kinda disappointed with the “newbie experience” of Aion.
Maybe it was the fact that I’d already experienced the game in beta but I have to say that I found my progression through the gated, newbie theme park to be boring, grindy and repetitive. I think this is mainly due to the fact that I haven’t able to buy into the lore behind the game and feel any sort of connection to the world and it’s setting. It also doesn’t help that the storyline is very dull and the quests extremely uninteresting and sometimes even downright poorly designed (I thank God I More >
