Star Trek Online: Player Progression DevChat Today!

It seems like progression is certainly a hot topic in the Star Trek Online community, and as a result Cryptic Studios will be hosting a devchat on the subject today at 11:30AM PST.
The subject has been covered in previous editions of the Ask Cryptic series, but the developers would like to give members of the community a chance to ask questions of the developers in real time in order to clear up any remaining confusion.
To join the chat join #STO after connecting to irc.coldfront.net with your IRC client of choice, or if you’re lazy like I am, use the provided Coldfront Java client.

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures: Nights of the Lost Souls Event!

Nights of the Lost Souls has been announced for Age of Conan as this year’s Halloween event, and it is scheduled to go live following the release of Update 5.6. The event will consist of several new quests that will pit players both solo and teamed against three Lost Souls. Defeating these Lost Souls will earn brave adventurers a number of interesting rewards.
My favorite reward is the "Undead Backscratcher," which is basically a large bone handle with a detached undead arm affixed to it by flesh and bone wrappings. That’s certainly one way to scratch an itch! Examples of other rewards on offer include the Fermented Brain Juice, which when consumed seems to take the usual process of drunkenness and inverts it, first you vomit, then you get drunk!

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures: The Iron Tower

The team over at Funcom has penned this developer journal giving us details on the newest dungeon in the game: The Iron Tower.
From the hands of Conan himself the Iron Tower was founded as a prison of civil confinement for the most malicious and vile criminals within Aquilonia. Murders, thieves and other deviant corrupted souls are here awaiting their unforseen judgement before the hands of Mitra.
The Iron Tower brings the final chapter from the epic story of Tarantia Common District. This closure introduces a vast amount of new and challenging game play including four new epic boss encounters, five mini-boss encounters, the chance of five rare boss encounters, and many new exciting rewards for levels 78 to 80.
Towering over the rooftops below, The Iron Tower can be seen from anywhere in the Tarantia Commons District. Previously inaccessible for players on the Age of Conan servers, the new dungeon is now opening up for adventurers with who dare to face the many challenges within.

Funcom has provided us with this internally conducted interview with Carola Berens, one of the developers working on the Iron Tower dungeon for Age of Conan.
Question:
Can you tell us a bit about the background story for this dungeon?
Carola Berens:
The background story for the Iron Tower is deeply involved with the ongoing conflict in the common district. Anoki, the leader of the Daughters, has gathered her officers and invaded the tower. Her reasons are yet unknown, but word on the street has it that she is trying to free a specific prisoner. She has successfully bribed the tower’s guards and many captives stand by her side in exchange for their freedom. There is only one obstacle that she hasn’t overcome yet. A priest of Mitra named Desumo had himself imprisoned voluntarily. He made it his one task in life to prevent anyone from getting close to this prisoner. He converted many of the detained criminals to follow the ways of Mitra and support his cause. Now, his cult is all that stands between Anoki and her goal. But which one is in the right and which one is in the wrong? That’s for the player to find out.

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures: Veteran Rewards Explained

In this developer journal, the team from Funcom lays out the Vertean Rewards system, how it works and what items will be available to players to reward them for their loyalty.
Sticking with the game over a longer period of time should yield rewards, right?
That is why the Age of Conan developers are now introducing Veteran Points to the game. This will give players who have subscribed to the game for a certain amount of time a wide choice of different rewards to choose from. From exciting new pets to useful new equipment, the rewards are many and you have the power to choose.
These rewards are available at new vendor NPCs in-game and will offer a wide range of items, options and services that will only be available to veteran players.
The idea behind the veteran items is not to create items that make characters more powerful, but to offer convenience and social items for veteran players to enjoy, either to offer things like better travel options for their characters or to make things a little easier when they start a new alt character.

Good evening, everyone! We’ve been receiving some great questions about the New Player Guilds and the Advice Channel that we’d like to cover in a mini-FAQ. Read on for answers to your questions about these two new game update 1.3.2 features, and keep those questions coming!
The New Player GuildsQ. When I create a new character, when can I join the New Player Guild?
A. All characters created prior to the launch of the New User Journey (game update 1.3.2) will automatically join the New Player Guild (called The Forces of Order or The Forces of Destruction) when they reach Chapter 2 Empire vs. Chaos. If you created a new character prior to the New User Journey changes in game update 1.3.2, and are in one of the other pairing’s starting areas, you will not be placed in the New Player Guild when you reach Chapter 2.
Q. I have a preexisting, low-Rank, unguilded character that I started out in one of the other pairings (Elf vs. Dark Elf or Dwarf vs. Greenskin), and I want to get into the New Player Guild. How do go about joining?

Star Trek Online: Release Window Set for Q1 2010

Cryptic Studios has confirmed to Videogamer.com that Star Trek Online is still set for "Stardate 2010" but in a window much earlier than many of us expected. Indeed, Star Trek Online will launch sometime in Q1 2010, and Cryptic Studios also confirms that beta is just around the corner.
In a phone interview with Videogamer.com, Star Trek Online Executive Producer Craig Zinkievich said of the release date, "Without giving you the date, which I’m not allowed to give out or else the marketing people will come and smack me in the back of the head, I can tell you that the game will be out the first quarter of 2010."

EVE Online: Content in EVE’s Sandbox

MMORPG.com’s Jon Wood akes a look at how content is handled in a sandbox game like EVE Online as opposed to in a more typical theme park game.
Creating content for most MMOs is a fairly simple task to understand. You take your setting, and you develop quest and dungeon content for the various level track throughout your game. It’s a time consuming process, but it’s a relatively easy one to map out.
In the case of a sandbox game like EVE Online, on the other hand, the waters get a little bit murkier. The goal of any sandbox game is to create an environment for players to interact with, but on the whole, leave the bulk of the action in the hands of the individual player.
“We want to create an immersive back story, establishing the setting for the characters that allows for player interactions,” said CCP’s Tony Gonzales, the man in charge of the EVE Online IP during a presentation at this past EVE Fan Fest. It is from these interactions that EVE Online derives most of its overall tone.
