The Secret World: My Wife the Noob and TSW
May 16th
Not everyone knows all things about all MMOs. Once in awhile, a rank amateur joins the legion fans surrounding the MMO-niverse. In our latest look at The Secret World, we check out the game through the eyes of a n00b. See what she thinks and then leave your thoughts in the comments.
My wife’s not what you would probably call a “gamer”. Sure enough she’s played games over the course of her life, and she’s once sported a healthy (but passing) interest in social games. She’s also fond of the sort of more active titles you’ll find on the Wii and Xbox Kinect. But MMORPGs? She leaves that stuff to her husband, and rightly so. I’d never wish her the sort of unhealthy obsession with virtual worlds I find myself making a living with. I’m nerd enough for the both of us, thank you. But that doesn’t mean she’s not interested in my passion. She’s gone to events with me, taken notes at panels, and last year even met Ragnar and the Funcom crew working on The Secret World while we were at New York Comic Con.

More >The Pride of Taern: Dripping with Nostalgia
May 16th
The Pride of Taern is a new game with a retro look that will attract a lot of folks who wax nostalgic about the 90s. We've given The Pride of Taern a look and have a first preview for you. Check it out!
To help us remember just how "OMGAMAZE" the 1990s were, is The Pride of Taern: an isometric MMORPG with the tagline "I can't believe it's not Black Isle." This Polish creation is dripping in so much nostalgia, antiquated design, and end-of-the-millennium funk, that it will have everybody misty-eyed, wearing their cap sideways, and forever remember the glorious, heady days of the best decade "evur."

Tribes Ascend Skis to Victory
May 16th
Hi-Rez must be pretty amped this morning. Download data has been made available for free-to-play shooter Tribes: Ascend, and the numbers look very, very good. Since launching last month, the game has seen over 1.2 million downloads. 110,000 of those downloads came from the game’s built-in referral system.
Todd Harris, COO of Hi-Rez, noted in early May that Tribes had around 800,000 registered accounts. He also noted that the team has plans to land a few thousand more players by localizing the game for various regions. At the moment, Tribes: Ascend is available only in English.
Of course, the game is free-to-play, so these download figures don’t really give us much to go on in terms of revenue generated. We’ll have to wait for Hi-Rez to compile and release that information. In the meantime, we can safely assume the game is doing well, since the company is pushing for a global launch.
Have you picked up Tribes: Ascend? What do you think?

Free Lightsabers and Boring Quests for Everyone!
May 16th
BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic is doing, by most accounts, okay. The game surged to 1.7 million active subscribers after its launch, but recently lost around 400,000—current tallies put the game’s population at around 1.3 million. Still a pretty strong player base, but not very inspiring to EA shareholders or analysts.
In order to keep up interest in the game and entice new players into the fold, BioWare has been offering gamers free weekend passes to check out everything The Old Republic has to offer. The next such weekend begins tomorrow (Thursday), and will last through Sunday. Of course, you’ll only be able to access this free weekend if you haven’t jumped in on BioWare’s previous free events—wouldn’t want you to have too much fun without paying!
Players participating in the free preview will be capped at level 15, though they will be able to engage in PVP combat and participate in low-level flashpoints.
Is a free weekend enough to bring you into SWTOR?
