Guild Wars 2: Charr Trailer, Background & Screens
Apr 21st
Arena.Net and the Guild Wars 2 team have partnered with MMORPG.com to bring our readers an exclusive look at the Charr. We've got a terrific trailer of the starting area for the Charr, a pair of screens and an article with the rich background history of the feline race. Check it out and then leave a comment or two.
The feline charr of Tyria are a victorious race challenged by their own success. They have survived defeat, oppression, and civil war, but have returned, reconquered and rebuilt their original homes. Their mighty fortress, the Black Citadel, dominates the surrounding ruins of the human city of Rin, and their non-magical technology is the mightiest in the land. Yet despite their success, they are challenged by divisions among their people, the power of the Elder Dragons, and the ghosts of their own victories.

Guild Wars 2: Sneaky Skritt
Apr 6th
In the third in a series of articles showcasing some of the lesser enemy races, the Guild Wars 2 team details "Those Sneaky, Sneaky Skritt" in the latest dev blog on the Arena.Net site. Skritt are small rat-like critters that dwell beneath the world's surface. Check out the blog to get an idea of the Skritt's history, society, ecology, religion and more.
No one really knows how the skritt hive-like intelligence works. The most likely theory is that the skritt simply communicate so rapidly that, when together, they can vet their ideas and choose the best one within seconds, rather than going with whatever plan each individual first conceived. Certainly, the skritt have exceptionally sharp auditory skills. They can communicate with one another almost instantly if they are within earshot. If you meet one skritt alone, he might not appear particularly intelligent, but if you meet several, they can discuss their surroundings in amazingly swift, almost ultrasonic chirrups and chitters, and are able to process information and make more intelligent decisions. Therefore, the skritt seem less intelligent in small groups and more intelligent when they gather in larger ones. Because of this, the skritt in their scratches are the most intelligent—and More >
Guild Wars 2: The Story Behind the "Commando" Joke
Apr 4th
The Arena.Net blog has been updated with a post by Cinematics Lead Horia Dociu, called in the blog as the 'mastermind' behind last Friday's April Fool's joke about the Commando class. Check out why this was the perfect gag to play on unsuspecting fans.
As soon as I thought of the idea, I drew up some rough storyboards of potential skill videos. This helped me generate a big list of all the assets we’d need to make the profession reveal seem believable—video production, models, wallpapers, web stuff, etc. A full profession reveal takes a lot of work because we’re still very much in the midst of production, so I also had to be creative with managing our resources. I started with the awesome eagle logo that Daniel Dociu, our art director, designed. Then I drew up a rough concept of a cool commando uniform and asked Delly, one of our talented cinematic artists, if he wanted to help. On his own time and in between assignments at work, he created a full custom 3D sculpt and generated the in-game model. I then borrowed a pellet gun from my friend Brent and had Monty and Matt, our cinematics animators, rig me up More >
Guild Wars 2: Commando Revealed
Apr 1st
Arena.Net has revealed the next playable class for Guild Wars 2. The Commando's credo is "If it can bleed, I can kill it" and the class is a much more modern interpretation than most would have expected. In addition to some nice artwork showing off the Commando's unique look, the team has fleshed out some of the lore behind the class.
A master of the battlefield, this elite soldier is equally at home on the mean streets of Lion's Arch, in the steamy Maguuma Jungle, or on the Orrian front. The multi-role commando is a combat medic, an infiltrator, and a tank. By land, sea, or air, the commando is a technological force to be reckoned with. Come get some.
Commandos have several different special skill types:
Grenades—Sometimes you need to kill a whole lot of tangos—fast. Grenades enable the commando to perform area-of-effect attacks with a variety of devastating results. From flashbangs that blind enemies to shrapnel bombs that apply bleeding, the commando has a grenade for every occasion.

Guild Wars 2: The Final Two
Mar 28th
In today's Guild Wars 2 column, MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller speculates a bit about what the final two classes will be. Arena.Net is playing these last two very close to the chest. Check out Garrett's thoughts and then let us know what you think the final two classes in Guild Wars 2 will be.
Looking at the Professions page on the Guild Wars 2 website, we are left with two shadows to speculate on. One clearly is Charr, the other looks like a human female, possibly Norn. With the Warrior, Guardian, Necromancer, Thief, Elementalist, and Ranger we have a lot of areas covered in the class department. Melee and ranged styles are well represented. There are pet classes in the Necromancer and Ranger as well as a defensive style melee class in the Guardian. So what do we have left in terms of game play styles?

Guild Wars 2: PAX East Incoming!
Mar 7th
Arena.Net is a company that loves fan-based conventions and this weekend's PAX East is one of their first stops during this year's convention season. Along with devs will come a playable demo where players can try out the newly announced Thief class and more. MMORPG.com Community Manager Mike Bitton has a few thoughts about what he's expecting to find out. Check it out and then leave a comment or two below.
I get the idea that the Thief, the sixth class to be revealed for Guild Wars 2, was meant to be a PAX East surprise, but the cat was let out of the bag during GDC and we’ve learned a good deal about the new class already. That’s OK, I’ve not had a chance to play the Thief yet so I am still looking forward to it, and for those of you heading to PAX East I’m sure last week’s slip-up has only gotten you more excited to head out to Boston this week. The Thief is the re-imagined Assassin class from the original Guild Wars, and so if you’re the stealthy stabbity stab type guy like I am you might want to keep your ears perked this weekend for More >
Guild Wars 2: GDC Presentation Report
Mar 7th
During last week's GDC, MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller had the opportunity to participate in a Guild Wars 2 panel. The Norn, Thief and a large-scale dynamic event were the focus of the panel. Garrett's got all the important information taken from the panel. Read on and then let us know what you think.
At GDC this week we got that chance to preview some material from Guild Wars 2. The presentation focused on the Norn race, personal story elements, and the reveal of the Thief class. Overall, the game continues to impress every time we see it. In this latest update a lot of depth was presented in terms of the player’s story. We watched an early run through of the Norn starting zone which incorporated a lot of story. The Thief had a ton of options that were showed off and we will try to outline all of them. Lastly the action combat remained at the forefront of everything they showed. This is our first look at Guild Wars 2 for 2011, let’s start the run down and see if the expectations continue to be met.

More >Guild Wars 2: The Norn Invade PAX
Feb 28th
It's now official: The Norn are invading PAX East this year, coming in full force on twenty machines in a brand new demo for Guild Wars 2. MMORPG.com Lead Writer Bill Murphy has a few thoughts on these denizens of the cold country. Check them out and then add a few of your own.
In a lot of ways the Norn remind me of Arnold’s portrayal of Conan the Barbarian/Cimmerian/Destroyer. I don’t mean that in a derogatory way either. As a people they’re absolutely resolute and tenacious. They’re stalwart, hearty, and fiercely determined to succeed. They’re also, and it should prove fun, the loudest and rowdiest of the pub patrons. They’re born hunters and combatants, and they hold a deep respect for many things, even as they kill them.

Guild Wars 2: Norn Q&A and Fly Through Video
Feb 22nd
The Arena.Net and NCSoft have released a new in-house Q&A with Jeff Grubb, Continuity and Lore Designer, Ree Soesbee, Continuity and Lore Designer, Eric Flannum, Lead Game Designer and Bobby Stein, Writing Team Lead. The brief Q&A features the Norn, the hearty humanoids from the Shiverpeaks. Check it out along with a fly through video of the Norn starting area.
Q: Why should a Guild Wars 2 player pick a norn character? In game terms, what distinguishes norn from humans and other playable races in the game?
Eric Flannum: A player should pick a norn if they want to play a larger than life character. Norn do everything to extremes and they live life to its fullest. To a norn, the journey is more important than the destination and one should always live in the moment. In game terms, norn player will have access to skills that draw upon their reverence for the spirits of the wild. This means that norn will be able to call upon the spirits and take bear, raven, snow leopard, and wolf form. Beyond taking animal form, the norn can use their affinity with nature in smaller ways as well. For example, a norn can call upon the More >
Guild Wars 2: Norn – The Race of Optimists
Feb 22nd
Norn Week has officially begun! The Guild Wars 2 site has been updated with the first article featuring the Norn race. The first posting gives a bit of information about the Norn including their native habitat and compares the starting experience for Norn players as compared to those choosing humans.
As you’ll see this week when we take a closer look at the Wayfarer Foothills area, a norn player in Guild Wars 2 will have a completely different experience than a human player. “The norn starting experience is tonally very different from the human one,” Bobby Stein says. “The happenings in Wayfarer Foothills, while dangerous, are more about hunting and celebration rather than outright war.”
In addition to a plethora of wild game and powerful creatures, norn characters adventuring in the Shiverpeaks will encounter the jotun, a race of fallen giants; the dredge, former slaves who claim the lost homelands of the dwarves; and the Sons of Svanir, norn who revere the Ice Dragon. There’s no shortage of opportunities for norn to prove themselves.
