World of Warcraft: The WoW Killer Redux
Jan 28th
In the last edition of The WoW Factor, the discussion swirled around what exactly it is that constitutes a "WoW Killer". This week, we continue to examine the issue from the perspective of you, our loyal forumites. Check it out!
You all had wonderful comments last time about what constitutes a “WoW Killer,” and as a writer I greatly appreciate input from all sources and of all types. While some of you took a steadfast approach and seriously discussed the merits of the definition of the term others duked it out fisticuffs-style while still others like punchrx made me spit out coffee due to their hilarious ingenuity with the written word.

Too scared to Arena…

So I finally managed to dodge the angry barrage of 2k+ rated rogues running vial and hit 2.2k. The problem is I am currently too scared to que because of the shear amount of vial trinkets out there and the possibility of running into legendary daggers.
I have never been this scared in my life, I haven’t played arena in over 2 weeks. I am currently having nightmares of rogues opening on me and killing me. It’s not only rogues who keep me away from arena, Hunter/Melee cleaves are almost equally as scary. I like arena, I just dislike dying in openers. I dislike dying in openers so much that I can’t even arena anymore. In WOTLK I never had this problem because it was actually balanced around that burst meaning people couldn’t just rush in and spam CC and get a kill without risk of getting counter globalled. Cata burst is not intended therefore not prepared for meaning it’s just plain stupid and gives unfair advantages to one side who can rush in and spend 30 second on CC people while being immune to damage and CC.
I don’t really know what to do with myself. More >
No Blizzcon – Cancelled in 2012?!
Jan 25th
Bashiok posted:
Yeah it’s a bit disappointing because we all really do enjoy being able to ’open the doors’ so to speak. But, it is an enormous effort by all employees, including our game designers and artists, not to mention customer support and quality assurance, PR, our business departments, and *hot breath on fingernails & shirt rub* Community & eSports to make a BlizzCon happen. In a year when we’re working to release multiple titles (knock on wood) it makes sense to focus our efforts. Also with multiple game releases we just wonder if we’d be at a point with any of them where we’d have anything really big or new or cool to talk about.
We didn’t have a BlizzCon in 2006 either, and at that time we were really strong on the idea that BlizzCon isn’t really supposed to be and doesn’t have to be an annual event. Of course then we have it for five straight years in a row… which obviously built some expectation.
Personally I always enjoy seeing the excitement, the rushing crowds, hearing the clicking of mice on the demo stations, and waiting in agony as the seconds countdown to an announcement and then the waves More >

World of Warcraft: No 2012 Blizzcon
Jan 25th
Citing a "jam packed schedule", Blizzard will not be hosting its (usually) annual fan convention, Blizzcon. The convention is the usual host for competitive online tournaments for StarCraft II and Warcraft. In light of the Blizzcon cancellation, these tournaments will be held in late 2012.
We’re excited to be showcasing Blizzard eSports on a truly global stage this year. We're also heavily focused on getting Diablo III, Mists of Pandaria, and Heart of the Swarm into players’ hands as soon as possible. In light of our jam-packed schedule, we’ve decided to hold the next BlizzCon in 2013.
Read more on the Blizzcon blog.
Guess this shoots Bill Murphy's prediction of a Titan announcement at Blizzcon 2012 in the foot. Perhaps we'll hear more at an alternative convention as has been done in the past.

70-year-old raiding grandma wields legendary and leads her guild

You don’t get much more charming than the Knitting Grandma, the surprise hit guest at last fall’s BlizzCon 2011 WoW Insider Reader Meetup. Remember her? She charmed our staff and meetup guests alike with her dry wit and talk of Thunder Bluff-themed socks.
Today, we press forward from the warm, fuzzy territory covered by the Knitting Grandma with two window-rattling volleys in the battle against gamer stereotypes:
You don’t have to be a granny to knit and play World of Warcraft. Even the author of Clique, the preeminent click-casting addon, gets his knit on. Whether they knit or not, even grannies can be GMs. Of raiding guilds. Who’ve raided since original Molten Core. And top the DPS meters. Wielding Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa’s Rest. (So yes, that does indeed qualify her to tell you kids to “GET OFF MY LAWN!”)

Mists of Pandaria Talent Questions
Jan 21st
Lylirra posted:
So my question is, with only 6 ’tiers’ of talents after MoP, what is happening to all the other talents that are currently in game? Are they going to be skills you learn from your class trainer, either active or passive? Or removed from the game completely?
A little of both.
To better explain, let’s divide the current talents into five categories: 1) mandatory, 2) very cool, but not mandatory, 3) sort of cool, 4) boring, and 5) useless.
We’re going to give you all of the “mandatory” talents to your class spec, and you’ll learn those talents at certain levels like you do with core class spells. Players who skip over what we consider mandatory talents today — like Raging Blow or Hot Streak — are unintentionally (or maybe even intentionally) gimping themselves, and that’s not what we want to have happen. We want players to be able to experience the full power of their class, so we’re going to award certain talents straight-out.
The second category of talents — the cool, but not mandatory ones — are really the heart of the new talent system (they’re the talents you’ll probably be choosing from in each of new six More >
Dragon Soul Difficulty Changes
Jan 21st
Blizzard posted:
During the scheduled server maintenance on the week of January 31, the Dragon Soul raid will become enveloped by the Power of the Aspects spell, reducing the health and damage dealt of all enemies in the raid by 5%. This spell will grow progressively stronger over time to reduce the difficulty and make the encounters more accessible. The spell will affect both normal and Heroic difficulties, but it will not affect the Looking for Raid difficulty.
The spell can also be disabled by talking to Lord Afrasastrasz at the beginning of Dragon Soul, if a raid wishes to attempt the encounters without the aid of the Dragon Aspects.
For those of you who raided in Firelands and/or Icecrown youre no doubt aware that as time goes on we want to keep people progressing by adjusting the difficulty. For any number of reasons a group may be having difficulty on a specific encounter each week, and our intent in adjusting the content is to ensure the ability to keep progressing, enjoying the content, and gearing up. With Icecrown we progressively buffed the players, and while this slow progression (and ability to opt-out of the buff) were both beneficial, it led to More >
Blizzard continuing to make big mechanical changes to Diablo III
Jan 19th
If you want to buy some wow gold or wow item, please click here.
While there’s still no release date set for Diablo III, it seems the release may be further off than some players were guessing, judging by the latest round of sweeping system overhauls. A new post by game director Jay Wilson goes over several major changes being made to the game, starting with the fact that Scrolls of Identify are gone. You have a short casting time to identify and item and that’s it, with no need to carry around a separate item.
The latest changes also remove the Mystic artisan, the Cauldron of Jordan, and the Nephalem Cube. The latter two were removed due to the inclusion of a Town Portal button, making trips back and forth far easier, while the Mystic artisan lacked a sufficiently defined role amidst other item modifications. There’s also a major stat overhaul, which reduces the core attributes to Strength, Dexterity, Intellect, and Vitality. They’re far-reaching changes, and only time will tell how much their impact might slow the game’s release as the team tests the altered systems.
