Feel hard to make quick reaction and click the right button in time when playing WoW? Dream of playing WoW with Kinect? You may like to try Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit (FAAST), the newly developed software that combines PC game with Microsoft Kinect and allows you to control your characters’ move and fight with your body. You can bind your body movements to the keys in game that can trigger certain events, say, attack, run, jump, etc. Just check out the video below to see the WoW gameplay with Kinect.
FAAST was developed by researchers at the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies, and currently, the software can identify simple moves and gestures like lean, push, swipe, etc. According to the developers, their future plan is to enable it to support more poses and “high-level” gestures and make it more user friendly. Now FAAST is opened to the public and available to download on its website. You can try it out.
About FAAST
FAAST is middleware to facilitate integration of full-body control with games and VR applications using OpenNI-compliant depth sensors (currently the PrimeSensor and the Microsoft Kinect). The toolkit incorporates a custom VRPN server to stream the user’s skeleton over a More >

While drafting this outing of The Best of WoW Insider 2010, I realized that Chase’s The Light and How to Swing it: Why is the mana gone? was accidentally slapped into the May 2010 edition. Whoops. It’s really supposed to be here, so I’ve engaged in a little cut-and-paste.
Otherwise, the march of Cataclysm news continued in September, and with it came a few startling announcements that didn’t go over too well with players. Who knew portals would be such a hot-button topic?

Researchers at the University of Southern California have come up with nifty way to play World of Warcraft using Microsoft’s ultra flexible device, the Kinect. Using a middleware software called FAAST or Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit (FAAST), which facilitates integration of full-body control with games and VR applications, the researchers was able to develop and control off-the-shelf video games such as World of Warcraft using the Kinect. According to the team, “since these games would not normally support motion sensing devices, FAAST emulates keyboard input triggered by body posture and specific gestures. These controls can be dynamically configured for different applications and games.” Check out the demo down below.
FAAST currently supports the PrimeSensor and the Microsoft Kinect using the OpenNI framework. You can download FAAST at the source link below.

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Blood Sport for arena enthusiasts and The Art of War(craft) for fans of battlegrounds and world PvP. Want to crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women? C. Christian Moore, multiple rank 1 Gladiator, examines the latest arena strategy, trends, compositions and more.
I’ve been with WoW Insider for a year and a few months. I consider myself exceptionally blessed to write about something I love. This past year’s Blood Sport has been a wonderful undertaking for me, and hopefully for you as well.
Beginner’s guide to arena
Blood Sport featured a Beginner’s Guide to Arena that quickly became a seven-part series.
Part 1: How to gear up for arena Part 2: FAQ and best arena specs Part 3: Basic class strategy Part 4: Survivability, conservation, utility, and the differences between each Part 5: Pressure, burst, crowd control, and the differences between each Part 6: A glossary of arena terms Part 7: How to find and keep a solid arena team
Although technically only parts 4, 5, 6, and 7 were written in 2010, it’s worth mentioning the other three for the sake of clarity and unity.

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Shifting Perspectives for cat, bear, restoration and balance druids. This week, we find ourselves rolling against a legion of hybrid casters (“It’s for my off spec!”) in PUGs.
The above is yet another snippet of beta video that never made it into a Shifting article, mostly because I thought it was just a funny little clip. I don’t know about other games, young lady, but in this expansion, we obey the laws of gravity.
Of interest is the almost complete lack of Omen of Clarity procs despite Malfurion’s Gift (I’m not sure how much I like RNG’s impact on our efficiency these days) and the healing done by the death knight’s bloodworms. The amount of “free” healing that adds up from tank and DPS specs was (and perhaps remains) a real concern, as Paragon observed after testing tier 11 raid content back in November. We’ll see how that plays out as more players approach raid content.
This column originally started out as a guide on the road to 85, similar to Shifting Perspectives: Patch 4.0.3a and the road to 85 for bears and cats. However, the more I worked on it, the more I felt I was just rewriting information already published More >
