World of Warcraft: 600 Jobs Going ’Redundant’
Feb 29th
Develop-Online.net is reporting that World of Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo developer, Blizzard Entertainment, is making 600 jobs 'redundant'. According to the report, 10% of the jobs will come out of the game development crew with the rest coming out of business oriented departments like customer support.
The announcement of job cuts comes as World of Warcraft is slowly but surely losing its grip as the top game in the MMO space.
“Constant evaluation of teams and processes is necessary for the long-term health of any business, said Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime.

World Of Warcraft Helps Older People With Cognitive Skills, Study Says
Feb 24th
Huffingtonpost posted:
World of Warcraft” isn’t just for nerds and Mr. T — it’s also great for older folks.
TG Daily and other outlets have discovered a study in the journal Computers in Human Behavior that found older adults who played the online game saw their cognitive skills improve.
Researchers split 39 men and women between the ages of 60 and 77 into two groups. One group played “World of Warcraft” and the other didn’t. Compared to the control group, some who played the game showed improved focus and spatial orientation.
The difference was especially clear amongst those who scored poorly before playing the game.
“We chose World of Warcraft because it has attributes we felt may produce benefits – it is a cognitively challenging game in a socially interactive environment that presents users with novel situations,” Dr. Anne McLaughlin, an assistant professor of psychology at North Carolina State and co-author of a paper on the study told TG Daily.
Unfortunately, Health News Daily notes that playing “World of Warcraft” didn’t seem to help participants’ memory.
This isn’t the first time gaming has seemed to help older people. According to a survey by Saga, one in 25 people over the age of 50 play Nintendo’s Wii More >

Rumor: Blizzard embracing F2P for unannounced game

Rumor has it that Blizzard is hopping on the free-to-play crazy train. Develop reports that the company “will embrace free-to-play and will apply the model in an upcoming, as yet unannounced game.”
The website says that Blizzard has declined to comment in an official capacity, and the site’s source could not provide more details. It’s been speculated that World of Warcraft’s recent subscription losses, the fact that DOTA is free-to-play, and the game’s unlimited free trial though level 20 all indicate a shift in Blizzard’s business model mindset.
COO Paul Sams also paid lip service to F2P at BlizzCon last October, saying that F2P “certainly is possible, if we find ourselves in that circumstance, or if we come up with a game where we think that’s the right business model, the most appropriate for players to experience it.”
Could the long-awaited Project Titan MMO be Blizzard’s first F2P offering, or is a completely new title in the works? We’ll update you as the story develops.
World of Warcraft: Giving Seniors a Brain Boost
Feb 23rd
In a new study conducted by North Carolina State University, researchers have discovered that World of Warcraft can give senior citizens a brain boost by improving spatial awareness, memory and help them to better focus their attention.
The study was conducted with people in the 60-77 age range. Half of the participants did not play WoW, the other half played about an hour a day over a two week period. After two weeks, participants were retested. Those playing WoW over the two week period showed 'marked improvement' in cognitive function.
“Among participants who scored well on baseline cognitive functioning tests, there was no significant improvement after playing WoW – they were already doing great,” McLaughlin says. “But we saw significant improvement in both spatial ability and focus for participants who scored low on the initial baseline tests.” Pre- and post-game testing showed no change for participants on memory.
“The people who needed it most – those who performed the worst on the initial testing – saw the most improvement,” says Dr. Jason Allaire, an associate professor of psychology at NC State and co-author of a paper on the study.

World of Warcraft: The Role of Utility
Feb 12th
In The WoW Factor today, we take a look at the concept of "utility" in an MMO with specific regard to a recent post by Blizzard's Ghostcrawler. "For MMO purposes we'll just say anything that isn't directly prioritized on fulfilling a roll of the holy trinity of tank, healer, or DPS is utility." Check out what we think about utility and how it can be managed in WoW. Let us know what you think in the comments.
In Ghostcrawler's most recent post the lead system designer addresses the topic of "The Role of Role" and throws around some ideas about how things may be handled in WoW’s Mists of Pandaria Expansion. All in all it is a very interesting write up that shouldn't be missed by anyone who concerns themselves with MMOs, yet I feel Mr. Ghostcrawler left out a bit of desirable discourse on the topic of utility within the role system. Whether this was through intent or with forethought for length and readability I cannot say, nonetheless there is plenty to discuss regarding what I see as the sickly bastard child of the holy trinity.

Blizzard, Valve Begin Legal War Over DOTA
Feb 10th
http://pc.gamespy.com posted:I’m paraphrasing here, but Blizzard’s response when it learned Valve trademarked “DOTA” in August 2010 was, “Not cool.” A year-and-a-half later, Blizzard has evidently realized that politely expressing mild disappointment wasn’t enough to dissuade Gabe Newell and company. Hence, this news: Blizzard has filed a Notice of Opposition against Valve’s DOTA trademark and is seeking full control of all things Defense of the Ancients — but Valve isn’t giving up without a fight.
Rock Paper Shotgun directs us to Blizzard’s DOTA legal filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), which was submitted on November 16, 2011. In presenting its case, Blizzard outlines how the original Warcraft III mod first came about and argues that all things made in the game’s World Editor are property of Blizzard as per its EULA.
“At all times, the DotA Mods have been marketed, advertised, and promoted as Warcraft III scenarios that require purchase and installation of Warcraft III and knowledge of Warcraft III’s gameplay mechanics, user interface, and on-screen display,” Blizzard states. “The fact that the DotA Mods are ’mods’ of Warcraft III and that to be played the user must first purchase Warcraft III is well-known and well-publicized throughout the United More >
