The Funcom team has updated their official AoC Blog here at MMORPG.com. This time, Glen "Famine" Swan takes a behind-the-scenes look at the game’s content team.
There is always a lot of speculation on what goes on behind the scenes during the development of a game. Some people imagine lots of sweaty developers packed into one room trying desperately to get the latest patch or build out for whatever deadline they are on. Other people believe they are all sitting at their desks with their super quad-monitor machines pwning n00bs in the latest FPS while drinking lots of Redbull. Then a slim few actually picture a great group of people who work hard doing the things they love to do; making games!
Whatever you believe the guys over here are a great bunch of people who make the impossible and unimaginable happen every day. They work day-in and day-out trying to stay ahead of the game while trying to keep up with the player. It’s not an easy task by any means and a lot seem to forget how hard the journey really becomes.

Craig Morrison on balance between sword and sorcery

In his very in-depth and quite sincere overview, Sillirion presents the basics (and hardships) behind what we now as ’rock, paper, scissors’ combat and balancing on the battlefield.
Most players are actually well aware of how hard (or, indeed, impossible) it would be to implement a fair and completely unbiased approach in a system with a dozen of classes, thousand possible spec’cings or even a myriad of items equipped. Thus, it boils down to three strategies – methods, as devs call it – of maintaining and shaping balancing in MMOs. Craig calls them ’maximum values’ (caps), ’availability’ (phat loot) and ’mechanics’ (I can CC u 4eva). In Craig’s own words it’s almost impossible to maintain good balance and still stay true to the initial premises of the game. With regard to AOC, the primary goal when creating classes was to make sorcery easier to play, harder to master, and melee harder to play, even harder to master (but, presumably, very rewarding). Today, we ask Funcom’s Craig Morrison about his philosophies on attempting to balance ranged and melee combat styles in an MMO.
I think before you look at the challenges specific to MMO combat in terms of balance between any two sets of character types you have to define what we are usually trying to achieve in terms of balance.
You might think it was easiest to define it very straightforwardly as ’every time I fight I have a 50/50 chance of winning or losing based my skill and approach’ but when you actually push players about what many feel about gameplay the reality is that they would feel balance was better when they have a chance of losing, but that they should win more than lose. Most seem to tend towards wanting something like a 75/25 mix of winning to losing…so they recognize the need for, and want, a chance of losing, but they generally feel that its more fun when they win more often than they lose, as long as it isn’t too much.

CROMCAST #14 - The Lenny is back – Hyborian Adventures

Es schlottern uns die Knie vor Furcht und vor Kälte, aber wir sind kein bisschen leise.
Nach dem etwas holprigen Start von Update 5.6 sind wir zwei Wochen weiter und haben hoffentlich schon einen Großteil der Probleme ausbessern können, die sich für einige Spieler mit Update 5.6 aufgetan haben. Wir haben uns diese Woche also wieder im virtuellen CROMCAST Studio eingefunden und sind wieder soweit vollzählig, da sich unser Lenny Urlaub von seinem Hobby, genannt Arbeit, genommen hat. Zum ersten mal dabei ist außerdem ein Offizier einer Gilde (Düsteres Schicksal), um sich euch der Community nicht nur in Schrift, sondern auch in Ton vorzustellen.
Wir bringen euch also diese Woche einen vollgepackten, kontroversen (Die Düsis sind zu Gast) und äußerst gefüllten CROMCAST!

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures: October’s Letter from the Game Director

Age of Conan Game Director Craig Morrison addresses the community once more in this latest Letter from the Game Director. This month’s letter focuses on a number of new initiatives Funcom has taken to cultivate the Age of Conan community, the new Recruit-a-Friend Program, the Volunteer Program, the upcoming 1.06 patch cycle, and more!
One of the more notable changes unveiled in the letter is the new Age of Conan community database. The new database will keep track of all Age of Conan information including developer posts, news, etc with the intention of giving players a centralized location to get their Conan information. The database is currently still in testing, but you can take it for a test drive here.

En la carta de este mes me gustaría hablar sobre la comunidad, qué estamos haciendo para promocionar el juego y cómo podéis ayudarnos. En las últimas semanas hemos puesto en marcha muchas iniciativas nuevas y quiero aprovechar esta oportunidad para comentar los nuevos programas y todo lo que os ofrecen.
Reclutar a un amigo…Junto a la actualización de hoy y al lanzamiento de las recompensas para los veteranos, iniciamos también un nuevo programa para reclutar amigos.
