Final Fantasy XI: Beginner Guide Part Three
Feb 25th
So you’ve unlocked your sub-jobs and you’ve leveled through the Valkurm Dunes in the jobs you wish to carry on with? Then it’s time to move on to the next areas. The previous part of this guide was focused on getting yourself acquainted with the partying and leveling system, unlocking sub-jobs, and generally getting used to the activities that you’ll be immersing yourself in for the rest of your life here in Vana’diel. This final installment will be focused on moving on to the different leveling areas, and should inform on the things one needs to do until they reach level 30, and many new doors are opened to you in the form of over a dozen new advanced jobs!
After getting out of the Valkurm Dunes, the next area most commonly used for partying is an area named Qufim Island, located right off of Jeuno. The tricky party here is reaching Jeuno without dying repeatedly. To get to Jeuno you’ll have to travel through one of three routes, depending on your starting country. If you’re from San d’Oria, you’ll go through the La Theine Plateau to the Northeast, and follow the road through Jugner Forest right into Batallia Downs. Once More >
Final Fantasy XI: Rise of the Zilart Missions Guide
Feb 25th
A lot of people who play Final Fantasy games or RPGs in general do so for the story. And that’s what Rise of the Zilart is trying to give here: a story. That, and the good feeling of killing something that’s been blocking your story progression.
If playing Final Fantasy XI for the story isn’t what you’re looking for, then you’re probably better off playing World of Warcraft or Guild Wars.
=================== A Note on Positions ===================
Throughout my guide, I’ll be using coordinates, such as G-7 or L-2. These coordinates refer to your position on your map. You can check your position by typing <pos> or by looking at your map by using the /map command. Note that if you have no map for the current area you’re in, it will simply display a map page with “No Map”in capital letters across the center. Your position will still appear in the upper left area of the map.
===== Terms =====
Here’s a brief explanation of some game terms I’ll be using in this guide.
Aggro: A monster that will attack you while you either stand, sit, heal, or cast magic close enough in front of it.
Buff: Casting spells that are beneficial to the party, such More >
Final Fantasy XI: Conquest System Overview
Jan 21st
MMORPG.com Final Fantasy XI Correspondent Malcom Calivar writes this overview of the conquest system in Square Enix’s contribution tot he MMO universe.
Vana’diel is a land torn by conflict. Concealed within its enchanting forests, arid deserts, and lush tropical jungles lies a threat too powerful for any one nation to combat alone. The Crystal War has ended, but the beastmen still wander the many regions of Vana’diel, posing a threat to travelers. The three main nations of Vana’diel seek to secure these regions, not just from wandering beastmen, but from each other, as well. Although technically allies, it is no secret that these nations seek to expand their own borders to grow in power and wealth. However, involving their respective armies in such a conflict could lead to a full blown-out war between these nations. Luckily, the nations have found a way to expand their borders and make it seem as nothing more than civil competition between their citizens. This is where you come in. Seeking to secure these regions without involving their own military forces, the three main nations of Vana’diel have enlisted the aid of adventurers to keep the beastmen population in check, and help them achieve ultimate conquest.

Final Fantasy XI: A Look at the Summoner
Jan 15th
MMORPG.com Final Fantasy XI COrrespondent Wesley Bond takes a look at the Summoner class in this helpful overview.
Like a Vegas Elvis impersonator, the Summoner is a flashy job that luckily looks better and performs better than most Elvis knockoffs. Summoner is a unique blend of mage and pet class that offers a nice change of pace between solo and party play. In a party, the majority of the time a Summoner will be called upon to be main healer. You will have one of the largest MP pools of any class and the ability to get regenerate it back over time. The reason for your massive MP pool is that your avatars drain your MP while you have them out so it is a must for the job. At higher levels, you may be able to find parties that want you to damage deal and backup heal. The nice thing about playing one is that you can opt to solo if things get stale. You will have to be more careful than a Beastmaster, but it can be done with the proper mob choice. The up side to playing a Summoner is that by itself you don’t have to buy More >
Final Fantasy XI: Is Simpler Always Better?
Dec 29th
MMORPG.com Correspondent Hebie Grate writes this article discussing recent changes to Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XI making it more accessible and less difficult.
Many reviews over the years have often described FFXI as “hardcore” or “time consuming.” Whether they are professional or amateur reviews, the consensus seems to be the same; Final Fantasy XI is demanding. Many players, even I on occasion, view this as a good thing. It is, after all, the FFXI tradition, and gives an individual a great sense of accomplishment upon achieving some sort of goal. Others would disagree, asserting that many in the gaming community are casual gamers, and often cite statistics that show players only sign on for a few hours a day. Regardless, things are changing in Vana’diel.

Final Fantasy XI: A Look at the Thief
Dec 26th
MMORPG.com Final Fantasy XI Correspondent Wesley Bond writes this overview of the Theif career in Final Fantasy XI.
To steal or not to steal, that is the question. Thief is a class you are able to play from the start and do not have to unlock to play. The Thief is a very utilitarian job in the game of Final Fantasy XI and is handy both as a main and as a subjob. It can be used effectively in full parties, small parties and solo play. The role of a Thief in parties may be a lot different than you might think. For those that haven’t played you may think about stealing, for those with little experience with Thief you may think damage dealing but Thief is more than the sum of its parts, it’s about control. Thief gives you some nice options when facing down monsters that can really keep things humming in a group or give you the option to leave the situation in solo. Evasion and Agility are your friend and when others rely on heavy armor, you will really on speed and dodging incoming attacks.
So what does this job do?
