Unity – The Future of Browser Games
Aug 8th
Traditionally, browser based MMORPGs were either text based or built using Adobe Flash or Shockwave. There are dozens of high quality browser games like RuneScape that utilize these methods, and they are still popular options. But a new platform for creating browser games has emerged. It offers developers a powerful and highly versatile all-in-one tool. That tool is Unity.
After several years in development, Unity Technologies released version 1.0.1 of their software on June 2005. Since then the platform has received continued updates and is now a powerful tool for creating 3D game worlds that can be launched on a browser using the Unity web plugin. Just how powerful is Unity? Consider that several major companies like EA and Cartoon Network have turned to it to create some of their latest online offerings. Let’s take a quick look at some of the top free to play browser games built using Unity.

Want to know what the “Tactical browser RPG” is? Here comes the answer! Gamigo’s new browser-based game Dungeon Master (working title) is in process.
Dungeon Master (working title) is a browser based tactical MMORPG which is developed by Limic Entertainment (Germany). In Dungeon Master (working title), players build their own dungeon and watch as one valiant hero after the other attempts to conquer it and fails – hopefully! Players also trawl other players’ dungeons and plunder valuable treasures.
Thanks to the powerful Unity Engine, all of this takes place right in the browser in highly-detailed 3D graphics!
The life of a dungeon master is tough: Traps need to be placed well and monsters should to be kept entertained and well-trained. Those treasure seekers that venture into the dungeon must not make it out alive. Only then will the master get any gold, equipment or experience. The more heroes fall, the more famous the dungeon becomes.
But at some point the hero needs a change of scenery. That’s when he heads out to conquer other masters’ dungeons. In turn-based battles he takes on enemy hordes, plunders their treasure and gathers experience. If a dungeon is conquered, it loses fame.

Zynga Acquires Japanese Game Developer
Aug 8th
In its latest foray into the Japanese market, social game developer Zynga Thursday acquired Unoh, a Japanese developer of social games, for undisclosed terms.
The move comes about a week after Softbank and Zynga unveiled a joint venture to create and distribute social networking games across Japan. Called Zynga Japan, the Tokyo-based operation also marked the completion of Softbank’s $150-million investment in Zynga, according to the July 29 report.
Zynga — creator of popular games such as Mafia Wars and Farmville — announced it had acquired leading Japanese games developer Unoh for undisclosed terms. Unoh is one of the building blocks for Zynga’s foray into the Japanese mobile products market, Zynga said in a release. Zynga Japan plans to localize Zynga games — perhaps including Facebook hits such as Mafia Wars and Farmville — and develop new games specifically for the Japanese market, the company said.
Founded in 2001, Unoh developed hits such as Machitsuku, Band Yarouo, and Kaizoku Chronicle and will continue to maintain games on sites such as mixi, Mobage-town, and Gree.
“Zynga is delighted to welcome the Unoh team, one of the pioneer Japanese social game developers, to the Zynga family,” said Mark Pincus, CEO and founder of Zynga. “They have More >

Google Acquires Social-Network App Developer Slide for $182 Million
Aug 6th
Since the time when Facebook has the ability to challenge Google’s leading position in Internet, people have kept guessing that Google will do something. And some of the latest moves of Google are also supporting the opinion that Google are going to do more in social networking.
Reported by New York Times, Google had acquired Slide, the start-up that makes apps for social networking web sites. According to TechCrunch, the sale price was $182 million with an agreement to pay an additional $46 million in employee retention bonuses.
Considering the former news that Google was touching some top game developers, Google is really serious this time. The acquisition is one of the clearest signals yet that Google is planning moves into social networking.
From the official blog, we could not find exactly the detailed product plans, but they mentioned about the social elements in current products like Gmail, Docs, Blogger, Picasa and YouTube. Wow, what a big project it will be?
Will it be a competitor to Facebook? Well, speaking to the New York Times earlier in the week, Eric Schmidt, the Google’s CEO said: “The question that’s in everyone’s minds is why are we trying to create a competitor to Facebook, and the More >

InnoGames Gets Into Facebook with WestWars
Aug 5th
Since 2007, Hamburg, Germany-based InnoGames has been a developer and distributor of browser-based games. Now the European company is getting into Facebook with a role-playing title, WestWars. Though we have known of this game’s existence for a while now, it only recently became open to the public, and has already moved north of 235,000 monthly active users.
In essence, WestWars is a typical text-based, mafia-style RPG, into which InnoGames has incorporated a number of interesting elements like character customization and gating mechanics. That said, there doesn’t appear to be much that holds everything together, and the app sort of feels like a collection of similarly themed features with no real unifying factor.
As with most role-playing titles, players start out as a nobody and have to work their way up to becoming the top gunslinger in the west. The means of doing so should be familiar to most Facebook veterans as users perform various menial tasks to earn experience, at the cost of energy. When that runs out, they utilize stamina (here, it is called “Duelenergy”) to battle other players.
Most of the standards features are present in WestWars. Jobs (quests) grant experience and cash, with many requiring random items to accomplish, and More >
