Playboy Makes Another Try Into Online Game Market
Aug 28th
Playboy Enterprises has announced it plans to launch its own online gaming label. Besides the “upcoming” Playboy Manager, Playboy is finding another way into the online game market.
According to gamespy.com, the company revealed that it has partnered with Bigpoint Games (Sea Fight, Dark Orbit) to create and distribute quality gaming content for Playboy’s audience of 18 to 35-year-old men.
We can also find the Poisonville on Playboy’s website under the game label
Poisonville is an action-oriented, Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) that puts gamers into a fictional U.S. city where crime and corruption rule the streets. Players must complete a series of missions in order to counteract corruption, regain respect, and rebuild their reputations. Throughout the game, players will encounter beautiful, Playboy-caliber women. In full-3D, players can drive a variety of vehicles, engage in player vs. player combat, and compete in ongoing competitions designed to stimulate gang warfare – all through a standard web browser.
It’s hard to say if it is wise for Bigpoint to cooperate with Playboy Enterprises. Although it’s clear that this will widely spread the Poisonville, there is still an possibility that people will consider it only a adult Playboy game.
Acclaim Games Shuts Down All Games and Sites
Aug 27th
Acclaim Games, owner of MMO 9Dragons, 2 Moon, and the browser-based games such as RockFree, Age of Lore, Pony Stars, seems in trouble now. All the visitors to Acclaim’s site will find a message saying this: ” We regret to inform you that all Acclaim games will no longer be in service effective August 26, 2010.” The instructions about how to deal with the Acclaim Coins are also on the notice.
At first, Acclaim was acquired by Playdom in May, and then, Playdom was bought by Disney for $563.2 Million. And as we know that on game market, Disney focuses on the casual games and virtual world (Club Penguin). Is it reasonable for Disney to cut the MMO part and focus on Facebook and casual games?
Anyway, this is a sad new for those players who love RockFree and other Acclaim’s games. Waiting for the final result that how they will deal with these games.
RockFREE is the first browser game that similar to Guitar Hero
G5 Promotes Mobile Game Supermarket Mania with Facebook
Aug 26th
G5 Entertainment recently launched a new Facebook game, Supermarket Mania, that’s a little different from those we usually review: instead of a full social game, G5 has released what amounts to promotional, social rendition of the casual Supermarket Mania game on the iPhone, iPad, PSP, and PC. Because those versions cost money, the new, Facebook iteration can be considered a demo of sorts.
On Facebook, Supermarket Mania is the “survival mode” of the more complete game found on other platforms, and is reminiscent of casual games such as Diner Dash. Continually increasing in difficulty, this fast-paced app quickly becomes challenging. However, with only one mode, it feels highly outdated by today’s social standards, and becomes rather repetitive.
Players control a girl named Nikki who is running her own supermarket. Customers are on their way and none of the 12 product shelves are stocked. In order to fill up the displays, Nikki must run from station to station and fill them up. The challenge is that her shopping cart has only enough room for a handful of stops, and once it’s empty, she must return to the stock room for more.
Refilling the cart takes 10 seconds or so. Meanwhile, customers are waiting and growing impatient. More >
Morphee Games Launches Galamon on Facebook
Aug 26th
Morphee Games is bringing us back to battle-oriented concepts with its newest Facebook release, Galamon. Previously, we’ve seen games like Battle Punks from Gravity Bear approach the concept.
Of all the automated fighting games out there, Galamon is perhaps most similar to an even older title called Ninja Warz. However, unlike predecessor, it comes to the table with a bit more in the ways of strategy and greater reward — along with room to improve on social features and game-play.
The objective behind Galamon is simple enough: Beat the opponent. When starting out, users are granted a handful of these creatures, called Galamons, that are classified as ninjas, pirates, cute, “ekeko,” aliens, or zombies. This doesn’t particularly mean anything, but different types have different looks and attack animations. What does matter, however, are the statistics and different abilities they might come with.
You see, the game puts the player in a galaxy full of non-player planets that contain specific team make ups. In order to progress, users must tailor their own team of four Galamons to best counteract it. This is where strategic planning comes into play. Each creature has its own set of stats consisting of attack power (damage), health, and attack More >
Monumental Launches Prime, 3D Browser-Based MMO Engine
Aug 26th
Notthingham-based Monumental Games is launching Prime, an engine that powers browser-based MMOs and virtual worlds with 3D graphics that are also compatible with Facebook. Monumental describes it as ideal for “light persistent-state worlds.” While the Prime engine does require users to download a plug-in, it will be less than 1 MB in size.
“Our aim is to make Prime the premier middleware choice for the creation of [light persistent-state world] games,” says Monumental’s business development director Mike Cox. “To reach the next level of social gaming, browser-based MMOs need to look and feel just as good as console games. Prime will make this much easier to achieve, freeing developers to concentrate on design and gameplay without the need to build the engine that powers it.”
Monumental is marketing Prime as a way to reduce the costs involved in building a browser-based 3D MMO (or virtual world) from scratch. Monumental developed the Prime engine in the course of creating its own online MMO Football Superstars and Facebook MMO Little Horror. Monumental promises the engine’s performance is optimized for all network types. Prime will roll out to select developers before Monumental makes it more widely available.
Digital Chocolate Sues Facebook Game Giant Zynga Over Mafia Wars
Aug 25th
Casual gaming company Digital Chocolate has just filed suit against Zynga, the leader in social gaming, because it says it owns the exclusive rights to the name “Mafia Wars”.
Zynga’s Facebook game Mafia Wars has become an instant success on the social networking site, allowing users to run their own family crime operation and recruit their real-life friends.
The game’s success isn’t sitting too well with Digital Chocolate, though, since it laid claim to that game title first.
According to court documents, Digital Chocolate is suing Zynga because it “falsely claimed to the public, the United States Patent Office and the courts that it ’coined’ the Mafia Wars mark and owns superior rights to the mark.”
Digital Chocolate goes on to allege that it notified Zynga of the name conflict last year and received a written response that Zynga would stop using the name. It didn’t.
Instead, Zynga went on a multi-million dollar campaign spree with its Mafia Wars game, making it now arguably the company’s most well-known game behind Farmville.
Digital Chocolate is asking the California Northern District Court of Santa Clara to issue an injunction ordering Zynga to stop using the Mafia Wars name, and to spend more money than it spent promoting the game in More >
