Japanese Publisher Announces New Social Game Strategy for Facebook
Aug 24th
Following earlier reports of a fiscal year net loss of ¥29.08 billion ($316.14 million), Namco Bandai announced in August this year it would be merging its two US business arms–Namco Bandai Games America and Namco Networks America–in order to create a greater synergy between its console, mobile, and casual products. Namco COO Kenji Hisatsune told GameSpot at the time that the merger would see greater emphasis placed on social networks and making games that appeal to a wider audience.
This week Namco Bandai took its first step towards social gaming, announcing its plans to supply full-scale game content to the Facebook social network beginning this month. As reported by Japanese news site Andria Sang, the publisher is readying two English-only titles to debut on Facebook: City of Football and Treasure Abyss.
City of Football is a fantasy soccer game that uses official data from the English Premier League, Italian Serie A, Liga Espanola, and UEFA Champions League. The game allows players to manage their own team, as well as pick and train their virtual players using a stock market-like system.

FarmVille Prohibition! Farm Game’s Virtual Winery Banned From Making Wine
Aug 24th
In the United States, Prohibition ended 1933, but it looks like it’s just getting started in FarmVille. Zynga has pulled alcoholic beverages from the game, because they don’t want “to promote alcohol consumption among the underage,” says a customer service rep.
“Recently, FarmVille decided to change the products that are produced in the Winery Cottage. The change was from alcoholic products to, well, Non-alcoholic beverages. The reason behind this change is that since FarmVille is a game, we have a lot of underage players. In connection with this, FarmVille does not want to promote alcohol consumption among the underage.”
So, if you decided to place a winery crafting building on your farm, your days of being able to produce virtual bottles of sake, wine and white sangria may soon be coming to an end. Some players have already noticed that their wineries have started pumping out fruit-based alternatives instead, such as Rich Grape Juice and White Grape Cooler.

20% of the U.S. Population Reports Having Played A Social Network Game
Aug 24th
According to the NPD Group’s newest report, ’Social Network Gaming,’ 20 percent on the U.S. population over the age of 6 has played a game on a social network in the past three months. This breaks down to around 56.8 million users in a brand-new market. The report goes on to say that 35 percent of social network gamers have never played any other type of video game prior. Women and older consumers were shown to be more likely to be new gamers.
Despite popular perception, the divide between genders is not weighed heavily on the female side. The study found that 47 percent of social gamers were male and 53 percent were female.
“Although 35 percent of social network gamers are new to gaming, it’s clear that a lot of existing gamers have been drawn into the social network gaming arena as well,” said Anita Frazier, Industry Analyst, The NPD Group. “This impacts both the time they spend with other types of gaming, as well as the amount of money they’re spending on gaming. As more players are drawn into these games, the entire games industry is going to feel, and have to adjust to, the impact.”

Gangsta-Bums: Mafia Structures Move From Penthouse to Pavement
Aug 23rd
Cosa Nostra, Yakuza and the Columbian Cartel are all well known to criminologists in behavior and structure. Now a previously unknown force has hit the streets. Facebook’s StreetRivals introduces: StreetRivals Gangs!
London / New York, 18 August 2010 – They operate internationally, hardly anyone knows their real names, and they commit crimes as an unbreakable unit. They specialize in neither weapons, prostitution or drugs – but their criminal enterprise is growing in power and influence. Their goal is to renounce the life of the gutter as they chase after the wealth that was previously denied to them. StreetRivals introduces a brand new gang feature, a replication of the same system used in the 2008 browser game of the year.
The aim is to infiltrate the black market and spread fear and terror through underground walkways and pedestrian zones. As players join a gang, they become part of a community, both increasing and strengthening their chances. By paying protection money into the gang fund they can also benefit from the security that comes with being part of a gang. In order to rule the streets and rise from the gutter, strength and protection is offered in numbers – a cardinal rule of the street.
