Copying is not the future of social games, unless you’re a Chinese social network
Aug 9th
Though copying of both foreign-made and Chinese-made games is rampant in China’s social games industry today, that’s not what will drive the industry forward.
Liu Jian, chief operating officer of Oak Pacific Interactive, owners of the popular RenRen social network, stated, “Copying cannot be the future model for social game developers, unless you’re Tencent.”
That barb, rare at a Chinese conference like the recent ChinaJoy event, prompted a round of applause. The issue of copying is a common one in game industry history, with the likes of Zynga, Electronic Arts, and Activision Blizzard being blasted for it at some point or other.
Tencent, a Chinese internet giant with a dominant instant messaging service and popular social network, has come under heavy fire for copying and pushing out smaller players. The magazine China Computerworld went so far as to publish a controversial cover story called “F**king Tencent,” with a picture of the Tencent Penguin stabbed with knives, writing:
“Tencent is never the first to “eat crab” [to try out new things]. It looks for a space in a mature markets to shove its way in. However, the methods it chooses also invite controversy: imitation, sometimes unscrupulous “shanzhai” copying.

WoL Supreme Hero Growth Handbook
Aug 9th
How to expel the cursed demons from ancient continent and make yourself become an invincible hero? Perhaps many players are eager to know the answer. Now let’s explore how to make a hero in WoL (World of Lordcraft)!
We all know, anyone who wants to be a real hero, must have enough supporters. There is no exception for the heroes in WoL. It is impossible to win victory for a lord fighting hard in ancient continent without fierce armies. This means the premise of becoming a hero requires you to establish a strong army.
All the soldiers must be recruited. Before recruiting them, players must have enough resources to construct a barracks so as to place these soldiers. How to get enough resources? The players can get resources as reward through accomplishing quests in WoL. Such as the expansion quests, as long as you’re accomplishing them, you will collect the resources which are necessary in construction.
The players should notice that different units have their own stats and features. So when you recruit soldiers, you must pay attention to the relationship between them so as that you can match most perfect and strongest army. In addition, when finishing recruitment, players should train them More >
Sparkplay Lays off Staff, Puts Earth Eternal up for Auction
Aug 9th
Earth Eternal developer Sparkplay Media has laid of the majority of staff and could be forced to close its MMO Earth Eternal.
According to CEO Matt Mihaly, the business has “run out of money” and attempts to sell or secure investment over the past two months have failed.
“I had to lay off all of our staff except for two people (one of which is me) on Friday, and it’s likely that by this time next week neither of us will be with Sparkplay any more either,” he wrote on the official Earth Eternal website.
“What does this mean for Earth Eternal? The answer is that it’s hard to tell. We’re putting it up for auction today and are reasonably confident that someone will buy it and keep it running,” he continued. “There is, however, the chance that nobody will want to take on the cost of running it. If that happens, Earth Eternal will go down when our internet and hosting provider pulls the plug for non-payment. It’s hard to tell when that could happen, but it’ll certainly be here at least another week, at minimum.”
Sparkplay Media secured $4.25 million at the start of 2008 after two years of More >
