Final Fantasy XIV: Producer’s Letter Details Team’s Work
May 23rd
The tenth edition of the Final Fantasy XIV producer's letter has arrived on the FFXIV Lodestone with an impressive chart of features and enhancement the team is working on. Included in the massive list are items that have already been implemented, a list of things the team is currently working on and things that are scheduled for later inclusion.
1.18 will see levequest balancing go into full swing, starting with revisions centered on rewards. As for crafting and gathering, we’re tweaking existing recipes and adding brand-new ones for crafter gear ahead of the summer. I’m pleased to say we’ve concluded our feasibility study for the Materia crafting system (though the name is still tentative), and will soon hammer out the details for the UI and start working on the data.
Now, there’s one new item on the list that fans of the FINAL FANTASY series wouldn’t have missed: the long-awaited battle with the primal Ifrit is on the way! But that’s hardly where it ends. We’ll be summoning forth more and more primals in the future, so keep an eye out for further announcements.

Final Fantasy XIV: Battle Reform Blueprint
May 19th
Lead Battle Planner Akihiko Matsui has released the blueprint that he and his team have been working on for changes that were coming to Final Fantasy XIV's combat system and the list of changes coming is far more detailed than expected. Check out the full blueprint put forward by Matsui and see all of the changes that will be coming to Final Fantasy XIV's combat system
I would like to clarify here that the battle team’s overarching objective is to lay a solid foundation upon which to build new elements – elements that will bring out the best in FINAL FANTASY XIV. The marriage of classes and jobs is representative of this endeavor. Whereas the ease of play classes offer will find favor with solo and casual party players, jobs will add a new depth of enjoyment for those wishing to take on high-level, strategy-rich content.

Final Fantasy XIV: Square Enix Posts Huge Losses
May 12th
Square Enix released its Q1 2011 financial data yesterday posting a $16 million USD loss. The company issued a revised earnings estimate for the remainder of the year. Much of the monetary difficulty can be laid at the feet of the recent and catastrophic Japanese earthquake and tsunami with between-the-lines assessment also pointing at a mishandled Final Fantasy XIV launch. The result? Tightened development schedules, revised earnings projections and the cancellation of some projects.
Under a rapidly changing operating environment and more prudent estimates of future cash flows, the Company plans to write down goodwill (approximately ¥8.8 billion). Further, as a result of introducing a tightened selection standard regarding title lineup to strengthen the revenue base of the Company’s digital entertainment segment, project development cancellation and related losses (approximately ¥4.5 billion) are expected.
Additionally, damage and losses during closures at, and restoration of, amusement facilities resulting from the Tohoku Pacific Ocean Earthquakes and Tsunami caused an extraordinary “loss on disaster” (approximately ¥0.6 billion).

Edited to reflect losses in USD.
Final Fantasy XIV: Lodestone Site Updates
Apr 14th
The Final Fantasy XIV Lodestone has been updated with a trio of articles of interest to players. First is news about the upcoming feature, Grand Companies of Eorzea. Second is a look at new monsters coming in the v1.7 patch. Lastly, the latest Producer's Letter has been posted with information about the patch teams and how they work. In addition, there's just a tiny hint about a new and improved job system.
Last up for today, the release of the Lodestone page detailing the Grand Companies of Eorzea was delayed a bit due to the earthquake, but will be up tomorrow. Under the direction of Akihiko Yoshida (no relation), the art team has done an amazing job, as always. The Grand Companies will do the nations of Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, and Ul’dah justice as their stalwart representatives, and related content such as quests will begin to go live in patch 1.17. We’ll also be seeing the rulers of each of the companies come forth. A historic set of events is primed to take place in Eorzea, so be sure to keep a sharp eye out!

Final Fantasy XI: Devs Answer Community Questions
Dec 22nd
The Final Fantasy XI team has posted a very short Q&A with regard to the December version update. The team answers questions about content adjustments, recipes, increased enemy damage, and PS2 issues.
Q: After the recent maintenance, the cost of augmented items increased from 1,000 Dominion notes to 2,500. I understand the need to control gil flow, but was it not possible to just lower resale prices instead?
A: Lowering the resale price of these items was an option we considered as well. As the items in question are augmented versions of equipment obtainable via Synergy, however, we came to the conclusion that such a measure would have undesirable effects on crafters. Raising the cost in Dominion notes was deemed to be the fairest solution.
